Transport of Construction Machinery – What You Need to Remember

A practical guide to transporting heavy construction equipment – from choosing the right trailer to safely securing the load.

Challenges of Transporting Construction Machinery

Transporting excavators, bulldozers, or cranes is a task that requires specialized equipment and precise planning. Construction machines are often heavy, have irregular shapes, and a high center of gravity. What should you keep in mind when organizing such transport?

Choosing the Right Trailer

The most commonly used trailers are semi-lowloaders or tiefbett types. The latter allow the transport deck to be lowered almost to road level, which is crucial when transporting tall machines under low viaducts. Also important are the ramps – hydraulic or detachable – which enable the machine to safely drive onto the trailer.

Securing the Load

Construction machines must be immobilized using certified chain lashings. Every moving element, such as an excavator arm or a bulldozer blade, must be additionally secured and supported. It is also important to protect windows and delicate cabin components from stone chips during transit.

Formal Requirements and Permits

If the set with the machine exceeds 2.55 m in width or 16.5 m in length, it becomes non-standard transport. This requires obtaining the appropriate permits and often means marking the vehicle with warning boards and orange flashing lights. It is also worth checking the tonnage restrictions on access roads to construction sites.

Experience of the Operator and Driver

Loading and unloading the machine are the most critical moments. They require close cooperation between the driver and the machine operator. This often takes place in difficult terrain, on unpaved ground, which further increases the level of difficulty.

Summary

The transport of construction machinery is a process that does not forgive mistakes. The key to success is attention to detail, technically sound equipment, and an experienced crew that can anticipate and eliminate potential hazards along the route.
